I have decided that the topic I will use for the research
simulation will be, how poverty affects a child’s learning and development. I
have chosen this topic because I live in a rural area and many children and
their families suffer from poverty. Many children the only food they receive
for the day is what they get at school. Just at our local elementary school
over 60% of children are on the free and/or reduced lunch program. I am hoping
to learn about the effects poverty have on children and their learning and
development to find intervention strategies to help children and ways early
intervention can help them.
Constructing the research chart has been very enlightening. I
really like the section key terms. It has helped me understand the articles I
have been reading. It is a wonderful tool to use. To take words I do not
completely understand and defining them in my own words has not only expanded
my vocabulary but has helped me understand the research articles I have been
reading.
I have had some difficulty using the Walden library and if any
classmates have any handy tips to make it easier I would love them. I am never
sure of which data bases to use. I have found some research articles but it
took me quite a while to find them. I have found some wonderful resources and
would love to share them. If you have any resources to share that would be
wonderful.

Hi Brandie,
ReplyDeleteWhen working in North Carolina most of my children also had "free" lunch. I couldn't get over the fact that so many of them would simply waste the lunches...do your children do that too? Poverty is all around me here in Swaziland, There is no feeding scheme except if an organisation cares and takes food to them, usually beans and some stew. I have seen that the children simply can't learn, all they think of is where there next meal is coming from. That is real poverty don't you think?
Hi Brandie,
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love your topic! I teach in a school district that is made up of extremes as far as social economic status is concerned. Some families are very wealthy and others are very poor. I think the fact that we have such a huge difference in populations makes it difficult to teach. On one end, I am always getting phone calls and emails from the wealthy families saying that they want want more of a challenge for their children. On the other end, I am the one trying to get in touch with parents to try to get more involvement from them. Children living in poverty have things other than school to worry about including where the next meal will come from. Such a sad life for so many young children! I look forward to hearing more about your research!

Brandie,
ReplyDeleteGreat topic! I learned so much about poverty in my area in our last course. I look forward to following you on your research journey. I do pretty well with the Walden Library and I am happy to help - let me know if you have questions!
